We only recommend and use Staedtler Lumocolor Permanent markers!!! Other markers have tendencies to wipe, rub, or wash off and or stain the cards. These stay on in all conditions but still rub off with alcohol wipes.
For the soft cards both sides can be used, just make sure you use the right side. Hang on to your old cards to study and improve.
